Even though the Dining Hall still featured its famous long lines for omelets and waffles, it also ushered in some improvements for the spring 2010 semester. And although home cooking is infinitely better than anything Chartwells could serve, it still helps to know that they are putting in the extra effort.

On Sunday, Jan. 24, the long lines during brunch made my friends and I frustrated, so we instead gravitated towards the bagels and tater tots. The best part came as we headed into the main room. Everyone I was with was about to scream because of the lack of seating, but the platters of fresh Rice Krispies Treats, assorted mini donuts, and corn muffins was worth the frustration.

To my surprise, the drink machines were also functioning, and at full capacity as well. In the desserts section, the coffee supplies were up to par along with a small selection of ice cream bars. However, the eatery needs to step it up with that ice cream considering that its only competition, The Hub, has a selection twice as big.

If this all seems too heavy, there’s always the option to make your own sandwich or salad. Unfortunately, the salad area isn’t always safe because the ingredients might be left out too long. The same goes with the meats and cheeses for the sandwiches.

The consistent crowding around the waffle section poses an imminent problem in which some restructuring may be in order. Switching from condiments to packets might be feasible, but would cost a few extra bucks.

If you have a sweet tooth, I would suggest dousing the scrumptious and soft Rice Krispies Treats with the sweet chocolate syrup. The syrup can also be drizzled lightly over a waffle, or poured into a cup of coffee.

Though there have been improvements made since the beginning of last semester, Chartwells’ mission is still unaccomplished. They will need to open their wallets, get creative, and listen to what the students want if they are to be completely successful.

Maybe nothing will happen. Maybe they just wanted to appear as if they were improving by giving us one memorable Dining Hall experience. Either way, it’s time for Chartwells to prove itself even further, because the students of Purchase College may be getting cranky and restless.
