Take a break from Purchase and a spin on your favorite slot machine at Mohegan Sun casino before you dine at Bobby Flay’s restaurant, Bar Americain.
The restaurant itself is typical Bobby Flay style- traditional American cuisine, mixed with New England soul and kicked up with a Native American twist. The wait staff is dressed nicely to accent the attractive ambiance. Though the outside is very "in-your-face" ( there's a giant bubble lettered sign and barber shop pole), the inside is chic. The tables are slightly blocked by a massive dark wood sculpture scattered with holes, allowing for some of the tables to be revealed. The restaurant is covered in crisp white-clothed tables, lit behind the shimmery, tentacle-like curtain.

The menu, however, failed to leave a lasting impression. The dishes begin with a pricey raw bar, from $14 to $120 dollars. The bar has a small selection of shellfish including lobster, oysters, shrimp and clams. The appetizers alone could wrack up a big bill with prices from $11 to $19. However, the " Flirtini" that is made with vodka, champagne and pineapple juice can make you forget all about the check. The Vidalia Onion Soup with Vermont cheddar cheese happened to be the best item out of them all (minus the side of $9 hot potato chips with a blue cheese sauce). For a lighter meal, opt for the light Gala Apple Salad which includes walnuts, blue cheese and vibrant pomegranates. As for the main course, you can have steak anyway you like it, tender duck, the Mussels & fries, or the Green Chile Broth.
Overall, Bar Americain, shattered my view on how traditional American cooking should be (in a good way). Take a trip and indulge!
