Ambadi, located in White Plains, sticks to their culinary roots and impresses customers with their classic Indian ambiance. The cramped interior is overlooked once spices and flavors fill the air.
Only taking up a small space on East Post Road, the restaurant could easily be missed. However, the food certainly fills the soul.
The storefront is simplistic, with a sign that mentions delivery and take out are viable options. Beautiful Indian artifacts decorate the windows.
Inside, the floor has simple brown tiles, but the walls are painted a bright yellow. Intricate paintings cover the walls, and are enjoyable to look at while waiting for one’s meal. Unfortunately, due to the restaurant’s size, there are only a few small square tables and chairs to seat patrons.
Thankfully, the portions are almost larger than the restaurant. Though they are not presented on fancy dining ware, the food excites with the fresh ingredients.
Ambadi is a great choice for the hundreds of vegetarians at Purchase. Among the options, one highlight has to be the Subji Saag Malai, which has cauliflower and potato sautéed with ginger, garlic, and spices in a spinach puree. Even though the appearance of the incredibly green dish may momentarily dismay, the puree is creamy and flavorful.
For spice fanatics, order the Chicken Vindaloo, which may blow your mind with its dark red, spicy gravy. The tender chicken easily falls off the bone. When the heat gets too high, try some soft and crunchy naan bread.
The most delicious item on the menu, other than the desserts, is the Chicken Tikka Masala. This recipe will satisfy any chicken fan with its semi-sweet, almond sauce.
The prices may vary, but if a Purchase student buys a combination plate, they get a discount. Ambadi is a safe way to dine on Indian cuisine without spending the money to fly to Mumbai.
