The on-campus Starbucks at SUNY Purchase College sells more sandwiches than any Starbucks in the country, according to Director of Dining Services Nick Mennillo.
“We average approximately 300 [sandwiches] a day,” said Mennillo. The cold and hot sandwiches sell out on a daily basis and according to Mennillo, are ordered three days a week.
The success may owe itself to a Purchase College innovation.
“We were the first college campus to have hot sandwiches in the country,” said Mennillo. “We pioneered how to serve that many hot sandwiches that quickly with one oven.”
Each sandwich is around five dollars, and work under student’s meal plans.
Starbucks employee Lisa Burstein, offered an explanation. “Even though it’s not free, it’s almost like it’s free because of the meal plan,” said Burstein.
But others are puzzled as to why the sandwiches have been such a hit.
“I’m surprised because the sandwiches here don’t seem pretty appetizing,” said Freshman Psychology Major Jessica Carlisi.
Starbucks is located within the residence hall Fort Awesome. Students who live in residence halls can grab sandwiches at their own convenience without having to travel to campus eateries in other parts of the campus.
“I buy a lot of sandwiches here because I don’t want to go to the hub, or I just want to be able to chill and read,” said Daniel Gravowski, a senior graphic design major.
Some are skeptical about the nutritional value of the sandwiches.
“They just don’t seem very good for you,” said Carlisi.
Most sandwiches are 350 to 390 calories, according to Starbucks.
There are various different combinations such as, chicken chipotle, roasted vegetable, roman tomato mozzarella, and the bacon roll sandwich.
